Emerald Network
The Emerald Network is a European-wide ecological initiative aimed at conserving biodiversity across Europe. It serves as an equivalent to Natura 2000 network for non-EU European nations. While both networks focus on safeguarding significant animal and plant species and their habitats, they differ in their geographic coverage. After the European Council's decision on June 23, 2022, Moldova were awarded candidate country status for EU membership. Therefore, the general aim of the project is to assist Moldova in advancing the establishment and management of the Emerald Network of protected areas, which will help the country align more closely with EU standards for species and habitat conservation.
Emerald Network in the Republic of Moldova
The Republic of Moldova has made notable strides in biodiversity conservation through its 61 adopted Emerald sites, covering 2744.6 km², which accounts for 8.1% of the country's land area.
